Road crashes kill 11, injure 56
Eleven people were killed and 56 others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Natore, Khulna, Rajshahi and Gopalganj early Sunday and yesterday.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reports: Four people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus skidded off the Nagarbari-Bogra highway in Boaliarchar Bridge area of Ullapara upazila at about 1:45pm yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Golam Mostafa Nanak, 40, of Talgachhi village in Shahzadpur upazila, Hazrat Ali, 35, of Shahzadpur municipality area and Amjad Hossain, 45, a madrasa teacher of Koyra village in Ullapara upazila.
In another accident, Abdul Jalil, 60, son of Abdul Jabbar of Bhagabanpur village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur, was killed and 10 others were injured when a bus turned turtle on the road at Bhuyaganti in Raiganj upazila yesterday.
Yet another incident, Halima Begum, 70, wife of Jharu Sheikh of Puran Dogachhi village in Kamarkhand upazila, was crushed under the wheels of a coach on the west approach road of Bangabandhu Bridge at Nalka yesterday.
In Narayanganj, a driver and his helper of a truck were killed on the spot when another truck hit the vehicle from behind on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Araihazar upazila yesterday.
The deceased are Ansar Ali, 46, the driver and Yakub Ali, 35, the helper.
The accident occurred when the two were repairing the truck beside the road in Baro Masjid area, said Araihazar police.
In Natore, driver of a three-wheeler vehicle Abdul Haq, 37, son Abdul Aziz of Narayanpur village in the sadar upazila, was killed on the spot as a truck hit the vehicle from behind in Bonbelghoria bypass area of the upazila on Sunday.
In another accident, Ratna Begum, 35, wife of Afil Uddin of village Moharkaya in Lalpur upazila, was killed on the spot and two others, including her husband, were injured when a truck hit a three-wheeler from behind on Lalpur-Bagha road at Attika in the upazila on Sunday night.
Injured Afil, 42, and Khazu Beuwa, 50, were admitted to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex.
Staff correspondent from Khulna says: Dr AKM Naimul Haque Raju, 38, a homeopath and president of Bangladesh Human Rights Protection Commission Khulna city unit, was killed when a pick-up van hit his motorbike on Khulna-Satkhira highway at Baratia in Dumuria upazila at about 8:00am yesterday.
Police arrested the driver Liakat Ali and seized the pick-up van.
RU correspondent reports: Nine students of Rajshahi University (RU) were injured when a bus of the university hit another bus from behind near Rajshahi Railway Station in the city at around 12:00 noon yesterday.
The injured are Ayesha Akter, Munmun Nahar, Tonny, Moon Akter, Sabbir Ahmed, Samsunnahar Ripa, Edward, Imtiaz Ahmed and Masud Rana.
Ayesha Akter and Shamsunnahar Ripa were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while the others to the university medial centre.
The injured students alleged that the reckless driving of the driver was the main cause behind the accident.
In Gopalganj, at least 15 people were injured when a passenger bus fell into a ditch beside Dhaka-Khulna highway at Shalinabox village in Moksudpur upazila on Sunday night.
Of the injured, 11 were rushed to Moksudpur Upazila Health Complex. Among them Monir, 40, and Liton, 25, were shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, as their conditions were deteriorating.
