Road accidents kill 15, injure 28
Fifteen people were killed and 28 others injured in separate road accidents in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Narail, Khagrachhari, Bogra, Chuadanga and Barisal on Monday, Tuesday and yesterday.
A correspondent from Rangpur reports: At least six people were killed on the spot and 25 injured when a bus plunged into a roadside pond on the Rangpur-Badarganj road in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Five of the deceased were identified as Asad Ali, 55, of the district town, Rezaul Karim, 55, of the upazila; and Kafil Uddin, 55, Sadeque Ali, 60, and Akil Uddin, 60, of Badarganj upazila.
Police said the Muslim devotees of Tablig Jamat hired the bus to return home after attending the Akheri Munajat of the Bishwa Ijtema, a preparatory congregation, held on the east bank of the Turag River in the capital on Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 5:30am when the driver of the Badarganj-bound bus of Chishtia Paribahan lost control over the steering and fell into the roadside pond while giving way to a microbus coming from opposite direction in Nazirerhat area of the upazila, police added.
The injured were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The injured passengers complained that the bus was carrying more passengers than its capacity and it also had a number of people on its roof.
They also complained that the driver was very reckless while driving and would not pay heed to the passengers' request to drive carefully considering the poor visibility due to the dense fog.
The bus driver, helper and supervisor however managed to flee the scene immediately after the accident.
The bodies were handed over to the victims' family members without autopsy following their request, police said.
Our Dinajpur correspondent says: At least two people were killed in separate road accidents here yesterday.
The deceased were Md Nasir Uddin, 45, son of late Tasir Uddin, of Muraripur and Narga Murmu 40, son of Peprashar, of Kamalpur village of Birganj upazila in Dinajpur.
Nasir was killed on the spot when a shallow-run three-wheeler hit him while he was returning home near Golapganj Haat of Birganj upazila on Tuesday night.
Narga was killed when a speedy bus hit him from behind on the Dinajpur-Thakurgaon highway near Birganj bazar.
Our Chapainawabganj correspondent adds: A bicycle rider was killed when a goods laden truck hit him on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway at Ranihati bazar of Shibganj upazila on Tuesday evening.
The deceased was Rezaul Hossain, 45, son of Abdul Haque, of Kamlakantapur village of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj.
Our Pabna correspondent says: A bicycle rider was killed when a Dhaka-bound speedy bus hit him on the Pabna-Nagarbari highway at Soradangi on Tuesday night.
The deceased was Intazul Hossain, 35, of village Mahamudpur of Santhia upazila.
Police caught the bus but its driver managed to escape.
Our Narail correspondent adds: A six-year old child was seriously injured when a speedy motorbike hit her while she was crossing the road at Mangol Hata village of Lohagara upazila yesterday.
The injured was Tonni Khatun, 6, daughter of Marfat Fakir, of the village.
Our Khagrachhari correspondent adds: One man was crashed under the wheels of a bus while he was crossing the road in Uttar Mohalchhara area of Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased Kachak Tripura, 30, a human-hauler driver, of the area.
Police arrested the bus driver from the local bus stand area.
Following the accident, agitated local people blocked on the Khagrachhari-Chittagong road for two hours.
UNB says: Three people were killed in separate road accidents in Bogra and Chuadnga districts on Tuesday night.
In Bogra, two students were killed and another was injured when a speedy truck hit their motorcycle on the Bogra-Naogaon highway at Saharpukur in Dhupchachia upazila.
The deceased were Toni, 20, son of Mahbubul Alam, of Post Office Para and Abdullah Al Farabi Piash, 20, son of Abdul Jalil, of Judge Court area of the town. They were students of Naogaon Degree College. The injured was Toni's wife Rezwana Parvin Mou, 18.
In Chuadanga, a motorbike rider was killed when his motorbike collided head-on with a tractor coming from opposite direction on the Chuadanga-Meherpur highway near Alokdia Bus Stand crossing.
The deceased was Nasim Iqbal Khan Tutul, son of late Tofazzal Hossain, of Post Office Para in the Meherpur district town.
Police seized the tractor but its driver fled away.
UNB from Barisal adds: A rental motorcycle driver was killed on the spot and his passenger injured when a bus of Bismillah Paribahan hit their motorcycle on the Charkawa-Tumchar road at Chandramohon in Sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased was bike driver Jasim Akon, 28.
Police said the unidentified passenger, injured in the accident, was sent to the Sher-e-Bnagla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
