PM visits Rajshahi today
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit Rajshahi today and join day-long programmes in the divisional city.
It will be the premier's first official visit to the district after assuming office in 2009.
She will attend a series of programmes at Rajshahi Cantonment beginning at 10:00am.
The programme includes annual conference of commanders of Bangladesh Infantry Regiment, reunion and giving out national standard award to Bangladesh Infantry Regiment Centre.
Hasina will offer special prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Shah Makhdum (Ra) at noon.
She will visit Rajshahi University to place a wreath at the grave of RU teacher Dr Shamsuzzoha and lay foundation of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa female students' dormitory.
The premier will inaugurate the newly setup 50-megawatt rental power plant by Northern Engineering Ltd at Katakhali in the city.
The plant will go for test run after the inauguration ceremony. It will take more than a month to go into commercial operation, an official of the Northern Engineering Ltd told The Daily Star.
The premier will also lay the foundation stone of another 50-MW peaking power plant to be constructed at the same site by Power Development Board.
Hasina will address a public meeting organised jointly by the city and district units of Awami League at the Madrasa Maidan.
The premier is likely to address some demands of the people of the district at the meeting, said Rajshahi City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.
The demands, including setting up of an Agricultural University, declaring Rajshahi as a special economic zone based on agriculture and non-stop Dhaka-Rajshahi train service, were jointly prepared by the mayor and seven lawmakers of Rajshahi, he said.
