Sedition case filed against Jamaat leader
Police yesterday filed a sedition case against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Obaidullah for issuing threat of "an armed revolution" in the country.
At a public meeting, he also had issued threats to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in an incident like that of August 15.
Jakirul Islam, OC of Godagari Police Station, filed the case with the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Rejaul Karim in Rajshahi accusing Obaidullah, publicity secretary of Rajshahi district unit of Jamaat.
Public prosecutor of the court Ibrahim Hossain said the court took the case into cognisance after a hearing and issued the arrest warrant against the Jamaat leader.
Obaidullah, 38, also former general secretary of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, was arrested on November 14.
Obaidullah in a meeting on October 19 threatened to kill the prime minister, if her government did not free the top Jamaat leaders arrested in connection with the war crimes.
He also said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami had prepared an army to bring about a revolution.
Earlier, the police pressed charges against Obaidullah and 20 others in another case filed under the Speedy Trial Act.
Abdul Malek, general secretary of Godagari municipal unit of Awami League, filed the case on October 19.
