Language hero Imdad laid to rest
Language Movement veteran and artist Imdad Hossain was laid to rest yesterday at his family graveyard at Ruhitpur village in Keraniganj following his namaz-e-janaza after Asr prayer.
Earlier, he was given state honours at the Central Shaheed Minar around 10:00am where people from all walks of life including freedom fighters, political leaders and cultural activists paid their respect, placing wreaths and bouquets on his coffin.
Hossain passed away in a city hospital at about 10:30am on Sunday from old age complications at the age of 85.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, State Minister for Law Advocate Quamrul Islam, Language Movement veteran Abdul Matin, CPB President Manzuzrul Ahsan Khan, CPB General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim and Bangla Academy Director General Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan, among others, were present at the Shaheed Minar.
Mentioning Hossain as a life-long friend, Abdul Matin said Hossain inspired fellow artists to take part in many movements.
Hossain will be remembered for his contribution in designing sets for state-owned television channel BTV, said artist Mustafa Monowar.
His body was taken to Faculty of Fine Arts in Dhaka University (DU) around 12:00pm yesterday where hundreds of students paid their last respect to him. The artist was a first batch student of the faculty, earlier known as Dacca Art College.
A namaz-e-janaza was also held at DU Central Mosque after Zohr prayers.
Hossain was born in 1926 at Rohitpur in Keraniganj. He formed the Agrani Shilpa Shongo with many other renowned personalities in 1952. Same year, he organised the East Pakistan Sangskritik Shammelan.
He actively took part in the Language Movement processions and motivated the Liberation War freedom fighters through his artwork.
