Baraka Patenga Power to get Rolls-Royce engines
Global power systems company Rolls-Royce has recently announced a $22 million contract to supply eight reciprocating engine generator sets to Baraka Patenga Power Ltd (BPPL).
The engines -- Bergen B32:40 16V -- will power a 50 megawatt power plant of BPPL that is under construction at Patenga, 14km south of the port city in Bangladesh, Rolls Royce said in a statement yesterday.
"BPPL is delighted to award this important contract to Rolls-Royce whom we selected due to their track-record of delivering efficient and reliable power generation technology and services across the globe," said Faisal Ahmed Chowdhury, chairman of BPPL.
The Patenga power plant will play an important role in supporting the development of Bangladesh economy, supplying electricity to the national grid, Chowdhury added.
"As a close partner in Bangladesh's achievements, we want to improve further our existing commercial relationship, explore business opportunities that would benefit both countries," said Justin Davies, head of UK Trade and Investment for Bangladesh.
Tackling the power issue in Bangladesh is crucial to helping meet its millennium development goals, Davies said, adding that the UK energy industry has a wealth of experience and expertise to offer Bangladesh in this regard and this is another example of the willingness of British firms to help Bangladesh meet its challenges.
In July 2011, BPPL signed a power purchase agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board to develop the 50MW independent power plant project on a 'build-own-operate' basis for a term of 15 years.
BPPL is a 51 percent subsidiary of Barakatullah Electro Dynamics Ltd, a Bangladeshi power generation company.
