Water bodies being grabbed
Water bodies are being filled up or occupied in Chittagong city in violation of environmental laws due to inaction from Department of Environment and Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), said environmentalists at a rally here yesterday.
Since the environment laws and water body preservation act are not being enforced, an influential quarter is taking the opportunity to occupy the water bodies, they said.
The protest rally was jointly organised by Jano Udyog, People's Voice and Paribesh Chhatra Forum following a human chain at Chittagong Press Club premises.
Presiding over the rally, Jano Udyog Chief Advisor Prof Mohammad Idris Ali said no effective initiatives were taken to implement the specific directives in the Detail Area Plan of CDA to preserve the water bodies.
Different rights activists, students, professionals and environmental activists also took part in the rally.
