50 barred from using calculators
Around 50 admission seekers were deprived of using scientific calculators by an invigilator in the first year admission tests of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in Sylhet on Saturday though the admission test committee has approved use of such tool.
The victim students and sources said Rezwan Ahmed, assistant professor of Mathematics department, Sust, forbad the examinees to use the calculators at room No 3307 in Mohini Mohan Bhaban of Madan Mohan College in the tests of B unit held from 3:00pm on the day.
Sources said the Sust teacher ordered the examinees not to use the calculators though it is not prohibited in the guidelines for the examinees provided to the invigilators. Later, he gave chance to a very few of them to use it and share with others.
Naeem Akhter, an admission seeker, said, “We were illogically deprived actually from getting chance of the admission as such calculators had been used in other centres even in other rooms of Madan Mohan college."
Saleh Taufiq who sat in room No. 3303 of the college said, “There was no restriction of using such calculator in our room.”
While contacted, the invigilator, Rezwan, admitted the fact and said, “I think it might not cause any difficulties as I directed to some of them to share calculators with others.”
When the teacher was reminded that use of calculator is not prohibited in Sust admission test he said, "It was not so important matter."
Member secretary of the test committee Dr Mastabur Rahman told The Daily Star that use of calculator was not restricted in the examination hall. "We will consider the matter seriously getting written complain against it," he added.
Chairman of the committee Dr Md Younus said, “Sharing calculator and any other things and side talking are totally prohibited in the examination hall.”
