Call to utilise climate fund for energy production

German trade show ends

The governments of western countries should release climate changes fund for producing renewable energy in Bangladesh, said energy advisor to the Prime Minister yesterday.
The production of renewable energy with the climate change fund will serve the purposes of both meeting the demand for power and formation of a special fund for the underprivileged children from the earnings of renewable energy sale, said Towfique-e-Elahi Chowdhury.
Chowdhury spoke at the closing ceremony of the three-day German Trade Show at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
He said the government targets to produce 6,000 megawatt of electricity by this year.
“We have already produced 5,000 MW of electricity." The government will produce 12,000 MW of electricity by the end of its tenure, he said.
Chowdhury invited German entrepreneurs to come with investment proposals in energy and power sectors.
A lot of German investment proposals are in the pipeline, said Saiful Islam, president of Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BGCCI) that organised the show.
He said the bilateral trade will increase by 60 percent next year through which both the countries will have significant chunk of business growth.
He said diversification of export of products is taking place with Germany. “We are exporting a lot of non-traditional items to Germany,” Islam added.
Ralf Reusch, deputy head of mission of German Embassy in Bangladesh, said the bilateral trade between the two countries will increase significantly in coming years.
A total of 76 companies in textiles and garments, shipbuilding, IT, logistics, pharmaceuticals,
chemicals and services showcased their products at the exposition.
