Probe assault on girl
The High Court yesterday directed the home secretary to form a committee by November 7 to investigate the incident of violating Sejuti alias Kamola, 16, a school student of Bakerganj upazila in Barisal, and her committing suicide.
In response to a writ petition, the court asked the home secretary to submit the probe report to it by December 7.
The daily Prothom Alo on Sunday reported that Sejuti, daughter of Sadek Mrifha of Raghunathpur village of Bakerganj upazila, committed suicide on October 21 after she was rapped by a group of miscreants of the same village on October 13.
Police recorded the incident as an abduction case instead of a rape case, when her guardians went to the police station to file a rape case, according report.
An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain yesterday directed the officer in charge of Bakerganj Police Station to appear before on November 16 to explain why the police refused to take the complaint as a rape case.
It also issued a rule upon the government to explain in three weeks why it should not be directed to punish the persons responsible for the death of Sejuti.
Advocate Manzill Musrhid appeared for Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), which filed the writ petition on October 23, seeking necessary orders from the HC against the persons responsible for the death of Sejuti.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain represented the government.
