Ivy's posters disappear
With six days remaining for Narayanganj City Corporation polls, posters of Selina Hayat Ivy, a favourite mayoral contender among many locals, have been disappearing from different parts of the city.
The Daily Star correspondents yesterday visited the NCC areas but did not notice a single poster of Ivy. But thousands of posters of Ivy's arch-rival Shamim Osman, who managed to get the blessings of the ruling Awami League, and Taimur Alam Khandaker, a BNP-backed candidate, were seen everywhere.
Supporters of Ivy alleged that Shamim's cadres have torn up Ivy's posters.
A group of local youths loyal to Shamim removed Ivy's posters by night, said Anwar Hossain, president of Narayanganj city AL unit.
Another local AL leader said, "It is nothing but a tactic to mount pressure on her supporters and to show muscle power to undermine her election campaign."
Shamim, however, denied such allegations.
Talking to The Daily Star, Ivy said she is not worried about the issue. "I am there in people's mind," she noted.
People of Shiddhirganj and Bandar areas said posters of Ivy disappeared within a few days after those were pasted.
Last week Ivy made two complaints to the Election Commission in this regard but to no avail.
In her written complaints, Ivy mentioned that activists of Shamim tore her posters.
Returning Officer of NCC Biswas Lutfor Rahman earlier told The Daily Star that they could not take any action against it due to lack of evidence.
"Ivy is in our heart. It does not make any difference whether her posters are displayed or not," said Almas, a rickshaw puller of Chashara.
