Media urged to cover more on child issues
Speakers yesterday urged editors of local newspapers to allocate more space for children issues to create opportunities for their proper development.
Local newspapers could play a vital role in social changes to accelerate development process of the country, they told an advocacy workshop titled 'Space for children in newspapers' in the seminar room of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) in the city.
PIB Director General (DG) Dulal Chandra Biswas, Department for Film and Publications DG Jahangir Hossain, Director Member Service of Save the Children Erica Khetran, editors of different local newspapers and NGO representatives, among others, addressed the workshop.
Senior Trainer of PIB Rafiza Rahman read out the keynote paper written by PIB DG Dulal Chandra Biswas.
Quoting a study of Muhammad Jahangir and Jahanara Begum in 2001 on child rights issues Dulal Chandra in his keynote paper said below two percent space was allocated for child rights issues.
The coverage of children issues in the newspapers is very disappointing, he said adding local and national newspapers as well as electronic media should give more attention to the children, as media is called their second parents in the present world.
Editors in the open discussion expressed their firm commitment to increase space for children in their newspapers to ensure wellbeing of the country as they are an important segment of society.
A total of 27 editors of different local newspapers took part in the day-long workshop.
