'Learn from unplanned Dhaka'
The authorities should take lessons from Dhaka's urban planning disaster to develop detailed plans for prospective areas before this urbanisation goes out of control, said speakers at a discussion yesterday.
With some district towns, including Narayanganj and Tongi, being converted to city corporation areas, it is high time to look for ways to bring the towns and divisional cities under detailed area plans, they said.
Otherwise, the urban mess in Dhaka would be repeated across the country, they warned.
The discussion on “Detailed Area Plan (DAP) of Dhaka city and way forward” was organised by Bangladesh Network for Environmental Governance (BNEG) in the city's Cirdap auditorium.
Prof M Habibur Rahman, pro-vice chancellor of Buet,
Jainul Abedin Bhuiya, chairman of National Housing Authority, Prof Dr Nurul Islam of Dhaka University, Mesbah-ul-Alam, secretary of BNEG, were spoke at the programme with its Steering Committee Convenor Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman in the chair.
