Create scope for good people to join politics
Speakers at a seminar here yesterday stressed on creation of a congenial atmosphere so that honest candidates can contest in the next election for the sake of democracy and good governance.
Shushashoner Jonnye Nagorik (SUJAN), an NGO, organised the seminar titled, 'One Year of Change: Expectations and Achievements.'
Held at Rangpur Rotary Centre, the seminar was presided by Mukul Mostafiz while it was attended by SUJAN secretary Dr Bodiul Alam Mojumder as chief Guest.
Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury and Rangpur Medical College principal Prof Najmul Islam were present as special guests.
Speakers demanded trial and punishment of war criminals of the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. It is a fundamental requirement for attainment of good governance, human rights and democracy in the country.
They criticized the government for not taking action against corrupt bureaucrats.
They urged the Election Commission (EC) to take all necessary steps to make election free from influence of musclemen and black money.
In his address as chief guest, Dr Bodiul Alam stressed on selection of patriotic and honest persons to contest in the next election for the sake of democracy and good governance.
In his speech as special guest, RCCI president Mostafa Azad hailed the government for bringing corrupt politicians to book. He said people want to see that the arrested politicians get justice. Otherwise, he said democracy will be in jeopardy.
Among others, Dr Rezaul Hoque, Prof Mozahar Ali,Prof Alim Uddin, Advocate Salauddin Kaderi, Advocate Abdur Rashid, Advocate Elias Ali, Advocate Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia, politician Anisul Hoque Piara, Shahdat Hossain, journalist Liakat Ali Badal took part.
