Hundreds join eventful day
Hundreds of young learners spent an eventful day through participating in joyful activities to develop language skills as they took part in 'English language fairs' in several schools of Kishoreganj, Bogra and Barguna districts yesterday.
Under English in Schools (EIS) programme, The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi jointly organised the fairs in coordination with the education ministry to encourage development of English language proficiency among secondary school students.
Adcomm Ltd is the creative and event partner of the fair.
Around 1,000 students joined the fair in SV Government Girls High School in Kishoreganj town, 500 students in Bogra Zila School and over 200 others in Barguna Government High School, reports our correspondents from these districts.
In Kishoreganj, SV Government Girls High School Headmistress Shahnaz Kabir inaugurated the daylong fair where students from the school as well as Kishoreganj Government Boys' High School took part.
Following screening of Lion King, an internationally renowned film, the students took part in spot quiz, vocabulary test, and questions and answers based on it. A few students participated in two-minute extempore speeches.
''This wonderful event has encouraged us to learn English in a different and interesting way,'' said Asma Sabia Moutushi, a class nine student of SV Government Girls High School, who won two prizes at the function.
In Barguna, Zila School Headmistress Hasina Begum presided over the fair inauguration ceremony where over 200 students participated in interesting learning activities and formed an English language club.
Students of Bogra Zila School and Bogra Cantonment School and College took part in the quiz and other activities at the fair held in Bogra town.
The three-year EIS programme, initiated two years ago to promote the learning of English in secondary schools, covers seven lakh students of one thousand schools, including 317 government and 683 non-government institutions across the country.
Under the EIS initiative, three complimentary copies of The Daily Star, containing a special page of English lessons prepared by the Centre for Languages of Brac University and coordinated by the education ministry, are given to each of the thousand schools five days a week.
