One killed in Sunamganj, houses damaged in Magura, Jhenidah
One person was killed and at least 16 houses were damaged during clashes between rival groups in Magura, Jhenidah and Sunamganj districts yesterday.
Our Magura correspondent reported that two groups of villagers-one led by ward AL leader Mominuddin Sheikh and the other by ward BNP leader Adiluddin-clashed at Amalsar village in Sreepur upazila yesterday.
At least 10 houses belonging to the two rival groups were damaged during the clash.
Police quoted locals as saying that AL leader Mominuddin allegedly assaulted the imam of the local mosque following an altercation over fixing prayer timings at noon. Soon after the incident, the supporters of the imam led by BNP leader Adiluddin attacked Mohiuddin's men, prompting them to retaliate.
In Jhenidah, at least 15 people were injured and six houses vandalised during a clash between two groups of villagers at Jugni village under Shailkupa upazila on Monday night, according to our correspondent.
Police and locals said the rival groups--Mollah and Joarder groups--of the village clashed following an altercation over taking power connection at the village from Pally Bidyut Samity.
The clashing groups used lethal weapons during the clash that left at least 15 people from both sides injured. At least six houses belonging to the two groups were also damaged during the clash. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Of the injured, six were admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital, two to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital while the rest given first aid at the local health complex.
Additional police have been deployed at the village to avert any further clash. No case in connection with the incident was filed with Shailkupa Police Station as of 6:00pm yesterday.
In Sunamganj, a man was killed and seven others were injured in a clash between two groups of people over land dispute at Borokapon village in Dirai upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
The dead was identified as Rajob Ali, 50, of the village. Locals said there was a long standing dispute between Faruk Mia and Rajob Ali over the ownership of a piece of land at the village.
According to police and local people, the clash ensued over capture of the land in the morning. The supporters of Farul and Rajob equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving Rajob killed on the spot and seven others injured.
