BNP's 2nd road march starts today
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will lead a road march towards Chapainawabganj from the capital today, aiming to drum up public support for reinstating the caretaker government system.
The march, which comes a week after the march towards Sylhet, will start from Uttara at 10:00am.
According to the programme schedule, Khaleda will address a rally on Aflatunnessa play ground in Bogra around 3:00pm. On her way to Bogra, she will also address three rallies at Kaliakoir in Gazipur, Bhuapur in Tangail and at Hatikumrul in Sirajganj.
Covering five northern districts, the march will end tomorrow in Chapainawabganj, about 309 km from the capital. Party sources said a “grand rally” will be held on Chapainawabganj Government College ground tomorrow.
Interestingly, the BNP chief has no programmes in the Rajshahi district headquarters though the party decided to organise such marches towards the divisional headquarters.
“The road march towards Chapainawabganj will create a mass upsurge against the government, which has made the government worried,” said party Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, who is also coordinating the programme.
He alleged that police arrested a number of BNP leaders ahead of the march.
Khaleda, also leader of the opposition, will tonight stay at Bogra Circuit House from where she will resume the march towards Chapainawabganj tomorrow morning.
On the way, she will address a rally on Naogaon ATM School premises.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday condemned closing by the government its website, which the party launched to broadcast the road march live.
“Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has shut www.bnplive.com -- a BNP website,” he added.
Earlier on September 27, Khaleda declared three road marches towards Sylhet, Rajshahi and Chittagong. The Dhaka-Sylhet march was held on October 10 and 11. The one towards Chittagong was postponed due to Eid and hajj.
And instead of marching towards Rajshahi, the party decided to march towards Chapainawabganj.
Khaleda Zia will lead similar marches towards Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna and Rangpur after Eid-ul-Azha demanding restoration of the caretaker government system, Fakhrul said.
The BNP chief earlier said her party will not participate in parliamentary election unless held under a nonparty caretaker government.
