World Food Day today

The World Food Day (WFD) will be observed in the country as elsewhere in the globe today with the theme “Food Prices - From Crisis to Stability.”
The theme has been chosen to shed some light on rising food prices and what can be done to mitigate its impact on the most vulnerable.
This observation also continues to mark the fact that 963 million people go hungry everyday and if the current trend continues, more than 1.5 billion people will be undernourished by 2015.
The World Food Day (WFD) was launched in November, 1979, by Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) member countries in its 20th General Conference.
The World Food Day will step into its 31st year today although eliminating hunger from the world is still a forlorn hope.
Different non-government organisations including ActionAid Bangladesh have taken several initiatives to sensitise and advocate the policymakers on the issue of right to food, and also on climate change and its impact as part of its intense advocacy programme to mark the day.
ActionAid will organise a policy dialogue titled “The recognition of women farmers” at Cirdap conference hall today.
Policymakers, smallholder farmers, key civil society representatives and key media representatives will attend the programme.
Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque will attend the programme as chief guest. Eminent educationist Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed will chair the dialogue.
Right to Food and Social Security Campaign will organise a citizens' rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the morning to draw attention of the policymakers and create awareness on food crisis around the globe.
