Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the South Asian nations to step up their concerted efforts to eliminate poverty from the region.
The premier made the call when outgoing Indian High Commissioner Rajeet Mitter paid a farewell call on her at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) yesterday.
“Poverty is the biggest and common enemy in the South Asian region. We have to fight together against poverty,” Hasina was quoted by her Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad as saying.
She said her government believes in maintaining friendly relations with all neighbouring countries on the basis of mutual cooperation in the greater interest of the common people who must be freed from poverty.
Both the PM and the high commissioner observed that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India have been cemented and would be strengthened further in the days to come.
Praising the visionary leadership of Hasina, Rajeet Mitter thanked Hasina for extending all sorts of supports to him in discharging his duties as the high commissioner of India.
The PM and the envoy also discussed various issues of regional and international development.
Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, Principal Secretary to the PM Sheikh Waheed-Uz-Zaman, PMO Secretary Mollah Waheeduzzaman and Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad were also present.
