Nine alleged Tahrir men arrested
Nine alleged members of banned Islamist outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir were arrested yesterday while trying to bring out a procession in front of the city's Baitul Mukarram National Mosque yesterday.
Those detained are Mohammad Mejbah, 25; Khaled Jubayer Siddiq, 32; Sajal, 18; Parvej Ahammed, 34; Mahmudul Islam, 23; Zahid Hasan, 21; Mizanur Rahman, 23; Mohammad Shafiullah, 30; and Shafayet Zamil, 21.
They are suspected to be students of different educational institutions in the city, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Tripti Khan of Paltan Police Station.
The procession was brought out demanding release of the outfit's top leaders and establishment of Khilafat rule in the country, he said, adding that banners and leaflets were also seized from the arrestees around 1:30pm.
They were preparing to file a case, said the SI.
On October 22, 2009, the government banned all activities of Hizb-ut Tahrir, Bangladesh on the grounds of public security as the outfit was carrying out subversive and anti-democratic activities.
Around 350 leaders and activists, including the organisation's chief coordinator Mohiuddin Ahmed and senior leaders Golam Moula, Kazi Morshedul Huq and Mahmudul Bari, were arrested since the ban.
