11 Jamat, Shibir activists arrested in Rajshahi
Police in separate special drives arrested 11 members of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jamaat-e-Islami from Kapasia and Kharkhari areas of the city early Wednesday for their alleged involvement in two separate incidents of assault on the police.
The arrested Shibir men are Tawhiduzzaman, 22, of Khulna; Shamsul Islam, 22, of Lalmonirhat; Rafiul Islam, 22, of Gaibandha; Khairat Hossain Mamun, 21 of Dinajpur; Humayun Kabir, 22, of Lalmonirhat; and Rejaul Karim, 29, of Kapasia.
They were arrested in connection with the police assault case of February 4, 2010 on Rajshahi University campus.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police led by Assistant Commissioner of DB, M Rokonuzzman, busted a secret training den of Shibir at Kapasia at about 3:00am and made the arrests.
The police also seized some books, party documents and four mobile phones.
Boalia police arrested four Jamaat men about 4:00am from Kharkhari area and Rajpara police nabbed another Jamaat man around 5:00am from Kashiadanga area in connection with the August 29, 2011 police assault case, said the police.
The arrested Jamaat men are identified as M Moniruzzman, 49, managing director of Shah Makhdum Islami Hospital; Shariful Islam, 31, a teacher of Kharkhari Girls School; Murad Hossain, 32, the school's governing body member; Ali Abdullah, a Jamaat supporter; and Mamunur Rashid, 30, of Kashiadanga.
When contacted, Rajshahi city unit publicity secretary said the arrests were made to harass their activists.
