Bangladesh's hopes of a gold from the ATF U-14 Series Tennis Tournament were dashed when the local pair of Rubel Hossain and Mahin Reza Khan were defeated in the final of boys' doubles in straight sets by Vali Mohammed of India and Moises Escobar of USA at the National Tennis Complex in Ramna yesterday. The Indo-American pair won the match comfortably 6-1, 6-3.
The pair were the only Bangladeshi contestants left on the last day of the tournament as the girls' pair of Ishtita Afroz and Ayesha Sultana had already lost at the semifinals stage on the previous day.
Meanwhile, Alan Sou Ming of Hong Kong grabbed the gold in the boys' singles beating Mohammad Vali of India 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the final.
The girls' singles gold was won by Kaur Delizavenne of Malaysia who comfortably beat Winona IP Wai Lam of Hong Kong 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
However, Wai Lam had something to cheer about when she teamed up with Claudia NG Hei to beat compatriots Joyce Leung and Sze Yu Wing 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the girls' doubles gold.
Later, Ekram Hussain, deputy managing director of Rangs Electronics distributed prizes among the winners with other dignitaries of the tennis federation present. Some 14 boys and 16 girls from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Pakistan and USA participated in the first phase of the tournament which will have its second phase at BKSP later this month.
