Lal Jamin to be staged in UK
Shunnon Theatre's debut production “Lal Jamin” will be staged in the UK. London based troupe Chickenshed Theatre has invited the Bangladeshi troupe to stage the play as part of its “Mini-season of Plays on Conflict”. The play will be staged at the Chickenshed Theatre Hall, Chase Side, Southgate, London on October 3 at 8pm local time. The Shunnon troupe is leaving the country today.
The monodrama -- based on the Liberation War -- has been written by Mannan Heera and directed by Sudip Chakroborthy. The play reveals a female freedom fighter's involvement with the war and her woes after 40 years of independence.
The play unfolds in a rural setting, zooming in on an adolescent and her carefree days. As the war breaks out, her father joins the freedom fighters. The young girl wants to do the same but her mother objects. Then one day, she meets a young man, whom she calls “an illusionist”.
The illusionist's spirit compels her to overcome all hurdles and join the pro-Liberation forces. But the girl, along with other freedom fighters, is captured by the Pakistani occupation forces. They encage her till the war is over.
After 40 years of independence, she asks the nation whether the spirit and values of the war have been upheld.
One of the leading actors of the troupe Aranyak, Momena Chowdhury, plays the protagonist.
Ramiz Raju and Julfikar Chanchal directed the music for the play. An added attraction is a flute recital by Bari Siddiqui.
