GP, Prothom Alo launch internet festival
Grameenphone and Prothom Alo yesterday launched a countrywide campaign to spread the power of internet among students.
The campaign that will run for around 100 days will pull in 1,000 school and college students, organisers said at a press conference at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the capital.
The opening event of Grameenphone-Prothom Alo Internet Utsav will take place in Nawabganj Pilot High School at Dohar, an upazila in Dhaka district, on Tuesday.
Participants will be shown how they can explore the world by the mobile internet, said Syed Tahmeed Azizul Huq, head of market communications of Grameenphone.
He said a quiz competition will be held at each event where the participants will be allowed to browse the internet to find the answers. The winners will be declared 'i-Genius'.
The 'i-Genus' will be considered as the internet ambassador to help spread the benefits of web in the community.
Under the campaign, there will be a number of audiovisual presentations on the benefits of internet so that students can learn the way the internet can enlighten their lives.
In the events, there will be interactive game sessions for the audience where they can win attractive prizes by active participation.
Matiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo, said the initiative was taken to attract students to the internet. The country's most-read newspaper will always be working closely to promote such initiative to empower the youth, he said.
“Prothom Alo is delighted to be a partner with Grameenphone hosting the programme across the nation,” said Rahman.
Mahfuzur Rahman, executive director of Bangladesh Computer Council, said once the government's goal had been to reach books to the students but now it has shifted to the internet and ICT tools.
Bangladesh lags behind in terms of internet use from neighbouring countries though the country is under full coverage, said Kazi Monirul Kabir, chief communications officer of the mobile operator.
Kabir said the internet festival is a unique initiative to bring the government's dream of Digital Bangladesh a step forward. The programme will help them understand the power of internet, he said.
The science and information and communication technology ministry supports the event as a strategic endorser while Opera Mini as the browser partner.
