BNP's road march, rallies start in Oct
BNP will organise road marches towards seven divisional headquarters and public rallies in 19 districts across the country from early October, aiming to drum up public support for its demand for restoration of the caretaker government system.
The decision was disclosed yesterday in a meeting of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, party's acting secretary general; joint secretary general and organising secretaries at the party's central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.
Meeting sources said Chairperson Khaleda Zia may declare the programmes in a public rally in the capital soon.
As per the party's decision, Khaleda will lead the programmes and address a number of street rallies, public meetings and party workers' meeting on way to the divisional headquarters from the capital.
Earlier on Saturday night, the national standing committee of the main opposition discussed the agitation programme.
Mohammad Shahjahan, joint secretary general of BNP, told The Daily Star last night, "We will try to hold our programmes peacefully but nothing will go unchallenged if the government tries to obstruct us."
An organising secretary said a committee will be formed soon to finalise the venue of the rallies and public meetings.
Party leaders said they will do their best to make the chairperson's tour a success by involving the grassroots in the preparation.
During the programme, the chairperson and senior leaders will sit with local unit leaders to make the local level leadership active. Senior leaders will also work to resolve internal conflict at the district and upazila level.
Earlier in April at a meeting of the party's central executive committee, the chairperson said she would visit most of the districts, and local units have to organise the tours.
She had also warned that the units, which would fail to arrange the programme, would be dissolved.
A liaison committee was formed to oversee the activities of the four-party alliance.
