Vatican envoy visits Rajshahi village
Vatican Ambassador to Dhaka Archbishop Joseph Marino yesterday said Vatican is encouraging the catholic churches in Bangladesh for increasing efforts in education sector.
The archbishop began a two-day visit to Rajshahi on Monday and addressed a special prayer at Saint Anthony Catholic Church at Mohipur village in Durgapur upazila, Rajshahi.
At the church, he gave a short interview to The Daily Star.
Joseph Marino said the churches are already playing roles in setting up educational institutions and medical facilities, alongside performing religious activities.
The churches are already operating two colleges and 47 high schools across the country where almost 95 percent students are Muslims and from other religions other than the Catholics, he said.
The archbishop said he learnt the church authorities in Bangladesh are now exploring possibilities of setting up of a university in the northern region of Bangladesh.
Jervas Rozario, bishop of Rajshahi catholic diocese, and Father Sunil Daniel Rozario, priest of the Mohipara Church, were accompanying the archbishop.
He conducted a special prayer at the church and visited the Catholic Church in Rajshahi city. He is likely to leave Rajshahi on Tuesday.
