Raozan 'top criminal' held

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a 'top criminal' of Raozan upazila in Chittagong from Feni early yesterday.
Kafil Uddin, deputy assistant director of the Rab-7 temporary camp at Feni, said a Rab-7 team from Chittagong along with Feni Rab conducted a raid and arrested a criminal from a house adjoining to Lemua Bridge in Feni by the Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 2:00am.
The arrestee, Bidhan Barua, was taken to Chittagong afterwards, said Kafil.
Nurul Amin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station, said one Major Ashfaque of Rab-7 around 8:30am informed over phone that Bidhan was in their custody and that they were taking Bidhan to his native village at East Guzra in Raozan.
Rab men did not seek the local police cooperation in this regard, the OC said.
Bidhan, who was wanted in at least seven criminal cases including three for murder filed with Raozan Police Station, remained fugitive for a long time, the OC added.
Contacted, Major Ashfaque admitted that they arrested a person. He, however, refused to give any detail of the arrest or identify the arrestee.
Chittagong Rab-7 officials also remained mum about the arrest.
Sources said Bidhan was a cadre of now-defunct National Democratic Party and a close aide of detained BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
