Bumper harvest of aus in Sylhet region
The greater Sylhet region is having a bumper harvest of aus crop this season due to favourable weather and better planned cultivation.
Office of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Sylhet said that the paddy was cultivated on 1,14,295 hectares whereas the target was 97,026 hectares to produce 2,43,200 tonnes. Hence the total expected production was 2,78,600 tonnes.
Already more than 80 percent crop have been harvested in some areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts and is reaping expected to be complete in a few days.
Abdul Hasib, a farmer of Baushi village in Golapganj upazila said, "The weather was much better this year. It helped produce a better crop".
In a bid to raise the aus yield in greater Sylhet region, the DAE distributed fertiliser worth Tk 3,32,81,950 this season under the agricultural assistance programme. In total 51,203 farmers in the four districts of the region got the fertilisers.
"Each of the poor and marginal farmers was given 20 kgs of urea, 10 kgs of TSP and 10 kgs of MP fertiliser free of cost", said the additional director (AD) of DAE, Sylhet region AKM Rafiqul Islam.
"Almost 12,224 farmers of Sylhet, 16,440 farmers of Moulvibazar, 20,525 farmers of Habiganj and 1994 farmers of Sunamganj district received the assistance", he added.
"Moreover, the weather was good with almost uniform rainfall during the season and the farmers are also more conscious in using fertiliser and taking care for a better yield", the AD said.
