Elderly man killed by wild elephants
An elderly man was trampled to death on the spot and his granddaughter suffered minor injury after wild elephants attacked them on their way home to village Headmen para in Ghilachhari union under Rajasthali upazila yesterday.
The deceased Chitra Sen Tangchangya, 60, and his injured eight-year-old granddaughter Rina Tangchangya, came under attack by a herd of marauding wild elephants at around 7:00am.
Rina was admitted to upazila health complex.
“On information, the army, police and forest staffs from Rajasthali headquarters went to the place of occurrence and recovered the dead and rescued the girl from the wrath of elephants after firing several shots into the air,” said Md Shah Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajasthali Police Station.
“We will take step for providing compensation to the family of the victim after receiving post mortem report, said Md Shafiqul Islam, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Pulpwood Plantation Division at Kaptai upazila.
Many have been killed and injured by wild elephants at Rajasthali upazila in the last one decade. Numerous dwelling houses and orchards have been damaged as well, forest office sources said.
