Flood, erosion victims of four districts agitate
Flood-hit people of three districts brought out procession while erosion victims of another formed human chain yesterday demanding redress of their woes.
Hundreds of the flood affected people of Satkhira, Khulna and Jessore districts brought out a procession and held a rally at Atharomile, a place between Tala and Dumuria upazilas yesterday demanding immediate excavation of rivers Kobadak, Betna, Shalikha and Marichchap to solve the water logging problem in their areas.
They also called for adequate supply of relief materials, safe drinking water and medicines.
Besides, they urged the government to announce the water logged upazilas 'disaster area,' reports our Satkhira correspondent.
The worst affected are Tala, Kalaroa and Sadar upazilas in Satkhira, Paikgachha and Dumuria upazilas in Khulna and Keshabpur, Jhikargachha and Manirampur upazila in Jessore.
Banbhashi Sanghati Mancha, Kendriya Pani Committee and Satkhira Nagarik Committee organised the programme.
The flood-hit people paraded the Satkhira-Khulna and Satkhira-Paikgachha road area and held a rally at the venue with Kendriya Pani Committee president principal Shafiqul Islam in the chair.
Speakers at the rally said over 5,00,000 people in Satkhira, Jessore and Khulna districts are still marooned as rainwater and waters from silted Kobadak and Betna rivers entered the area overflowing their banks on August 2.
They alleged that that the flood victims have been living without food, shelter and medicine because of poor supply of aids.
In Bhola, hundreds of people formed a human chain in the district town yesterday morning demanding immediate steps to protect around 17 lakh people from erosion and flooding, reports our Barisal correspondent.
'Peshajibi Sangathan Samannaya Committee' organised the programme participated by the leaders and activists of more than 50 socio-cultural political -professional-environmental organisations.
The six-kilometer-long human chain stretched from Kalinath Rayer Bazaar to bus terminal and Bangla School crossing to Tulatali road.
The participants alleged that the area of the district is gradually shrinking due to erosion and lack of an embankment.
Calling to save Bhola from Meghna erosion they said that the river took a serious turn in different areas due to sudden rise in water level caused by recent onrush of hill water and torrential rain.
The mighty river has already devoured about 200 square kilometre areas of Bhola, Daulat Khan, Borhanuddin, Tajumuddin and Manpura upazilas displacing about two lakh people, they said.
Shahbazpur Gas Field Project is now under threat of erosion, they added.
The river may devour a portion of the gas field at Hakimuddin Bazar in Borhanuddin upazila if steps for its protection are not taken right now, they observed.
