Death of 3 patients in a day sparks protest in Ishwardi
Death of three patients due to alleged wrong treatment at Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex and a private hospital in the upazila on Saturday sparked agitation against the doctors of the healthcare centres.
The agitated locals and relatives of the patients vandalised the hospitals and assaulted two doctors of the upazila health complex.
Md Abdus Samad, 70, of village Char Mirkamari died at Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex at around 10:30am while the two pregnant housewives died after caesareans at Islamia Hospital, a private clinic at the upazila headquarters, on Saturday night.
Although, the relatives alleged wrong treatment behind the death of the three, they did not lodge any case against any doctors of the hospitals with the police station concerned as of 5:00pm yesterday.
Dr Amin Ahmed Khan of upazila health complex said Abdus Samad was fasting and admitted to the hospital with cardiac problems at around 9:00am. Doctors could not immediately apply medicine on Samad as he refused to take medicine while fasting, Dr Amin said, adding that Dr Asma Khanam gave Samad an injection as his condition deteriorated, but unfortunately the patient died.
Two housewives, who died after caesareans at Ishwardi Islamia Clinic, are Rani Khatun, 28, wife of Md Shahinur Rahman of Ishwardi Airport Road and Masuma Khatun, 35 wife of Abdul Hakim Titu of Patilakhali village in the upazila.
Relatives said wrong treatment led to the death of the two. But Md Mozammel Hossain, managing director (MD) of the clinic, said Masuma died due to cardiac arrest during caesarean.
He said as Rani's condition became critical at the operation theatre, doctors referred her to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. She died on the way to RMCH, Mozammel said.
Police said relatives did not file any case against the doctors of the clinic and took away the bodies without autopsy.
