Compromise not reached
The Supreme Court Bar Association's initiative for a compromise on two cases filed against 12 pro-BNP-Jamaat lawyers failed as pro-Awami League lawyers did not attend its “compromise meeting” yesterday.
And the High Court yesterday decided to pass order today on the bail petitions of the accused lawyers.
The court was earlier scheduled to give its order yesterday, but it shifted the date following a time prayer from the petitioners.
The layers are facing charges of assaulting police and preventing them from carrying out duties on the court premises.
Contacted, SCBA President Khandker Mahbub Hossain said his initiative to reach a compromise and protect the accused lawyers from police harassment failed since the ruling AL-backed lawyers did not respond to his call.
He feared that if the accused lawyers were handed over to the police, it might affect the situation in the court.
The SCBA president said they will meet the chief justice today and will request him (CJ) to take steps so that the accused lawyers are not sent to jail.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the SCBA president is giving shelter to the accused who have shown disrespect to HC judges and assaulted police.
“I asked him (SCBA president) to ensure that the accused lawyers surrender before a lower court first, and then to hold a compromise meeting,” he said.
Shahbagh police filed the cases on August 2 and 4.
The accused lawyers are Mohammad Ali, Golam Mohammad Chowdhury Alal, ABM Waliur Rahman Khan, Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Shahiduzzaman, Mirza Al Mahmud, Sharif Uddin Ahmed, Abdullah Al Mahmud, MU Ahmed, Md Ashrafuzzaman Khan, Golam Nobi and Mahmudul Islam Swapan.
