Eight killed in road crashes
Eight people, including a government official, were killed and 15 others wounded in road accidents in Sylhet, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, and Brahmanbaria yesterday.
Our staff correspondent from Sylhet reports: Three people were killed and 10 others injured in a bus-pickup collision in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj yesterday morning.
The deceased are the pickup driver Abdur Rahim, 25, of Kesrigul village of Baralekha upazila and fish traders Alfaz, 38, and Abu Miah, 45, of Basirpur village of Juri upazila of Moulvibazar.
The injured took treatment in Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex and Habiganj sadar hospital.
Police said the collision occurred near Syed Sayeed Uddin Degree College on Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Ali Farid, officer-in-charge of Highway Police, Shayestaganj, said they recovered Tk 1.30 lakh from the pickup and would hand the money over to the families of the deceased traders on claim.
The correspondent adds that a government official was killed as a truck knocked down his motorcycle and ran him over at Parair Chawk in Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet yesterday.
The victim, Rupok Kanti Dewanji, 30, assistant manager of Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd, died on the spot. He was en route to his office at Fenchuganj.
Our Gaibandha correspondent says: Two persons were killed and five others wounded in a truck-pickup collision near the southern bus stop of Palashbari upazila yesterday.
The dead are Sukur Ali, 45, driver of the pickup and trader Kamruzzaman, 42. Of the injured, two were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Transport movement remained suspended for one hour on Rangpur-Bogra highway following the accident.
Our Dinajpur correspondent says: A man died after being hit by a bus on Phulbari-Birampur highway in Kamalpur village of Birampur upazila yesterday morning.
The victim, Md Bijoy Roy, 52, of the upazila's Dewrgram, succumbed to his injuries in the upazila health complex.
Our Brahmanbaria correspondent adds: A man was killed after a private car knocked him down on Nasirnagar road in Kudda village of Nasirnagar upazila yesterday.
The victim, Subal Sarker, 50, of the village, was declared dead in Brahmanbaria sadar hospital.
