Road crashes kill 14 in 2 districts
Al least 14 people were killed and over 65 others were injured yesterday in two separate road accidents in Keraniganj and Tangail.
Witnesses said a Mawa-bound bus of DM Pribahan collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound BRTC bus at about 10:30am at Rajendrapur on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Keraniganj leaving six people dead on the spot and 43 others injured.
Of the wounded, 10 were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctor declared three dead.
Of the dead, eight were identified as factory worker Nazrul Islam, 20, Jahangir Alam, 32, Moina Bibi, 55, her daughter-in-law Sufia Begum, 35, bus driver of DM Paribahan Tapas Mandal, 35, Zakir Hossain, 22, Anis, 35, and Nurul Islam, 55 while the identity of the other victim remained unknown.
Fourteen injured passengers were admitted to Mitford Hospital while others were taken to different hospitals in Keraniganj.
When the accident occurred, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw skidded off the road and fell into a roadside ditch. However, none was injured.
"The accident occurred when the driver of our vehicle tried to make way for the CNG-run auto-rickshaw," said helper of the bus of DM Paribahan Shefaul Islam, 32, who is undergoing treatment at the DMCH.
Quoting auto-rickshaw driver Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station Syed Selim Sazzad said, "The head-on collision happened when both the bus drivers lost control over the steering while crossing each other."
He said most of the victims were passengers of the bus of DM Paribahan. Both the buses were seized.
Six bodies were sent to the Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, At least five people were killed and 25 others injured yesterday as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Bil Gharinda in Tangail, reports our Tangail Correspondent.
Of the deceased, two were identified as Abdus Sattar, 45, and Shahidul, 35, of Sirajganj while the identity of the others could not be known immediately.
Police said a Dhaka-bound passenger bus from Sirajganj fell into a roadside ditch at about 12:00 noon when its driver tried to make way for another bus coming from the opposite direction at Bil Gharinda leaving four passengers dead on the spot and 26 others wounded.
The injured were rushed to the Tangail General Hospital where on-duty doctor declared one dead. Of the wounded, seven were in a critical condition.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to morgue for autopsy.
