Road accidents claim 8 lives
Eight people were killed and 41 others injured in separate road accidents across the country yesterday.
Our correspondent in Netrakona reports: Two people were killed and 25 others injured in two road accidents in Netrakona.
Ijjat Ali, 65, died on the spot when a Netrakona-bound truck knocked him down at Rajur Bazar in Netrakona Sadar while he was crossing the road at about 12:30pm.
Police seized the truck but the driver managed to escape.
In another incident, a man was killed and 25 others injured in a road accident when a Netrakona-bound bus lost control and fell into a roadside ditch on Durgapur-Netrakona road at Durgapur at about 10:00am.
The victim was identified as Sujan Mia, 35.
Seriously injured Ahmed Ali, Nitish Hajang, Maleka Akter, Shafik Mia, Khalek Mia and Anita Rani were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while others were admitted to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex.
Police seized the bus but the driver managed to escape.
Our correspondent in Kishoreganj adds: A tempo driver was killed and eight passengers were injured when a truck collided head-on with it on Bajitpur-Kotiadi road.
The dead was identified as Kajol Mia, 25.
The accident took place at Bairti village in Kotiadi in the morning.
Four of the injured were admitted to Jahurul Islam Medical College and Hospital.
UNB adds: Two people were killed when a speeding truck rammed into a motorcycle and a rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Nurpur in Habiganj yesterday.
Police said the accident took place at about 12:30pm as the driver of the Sylhet-bound truck from Dhaka lost his control of the truck.
Motorcyclist Lichu Miah, 35, and the unidentified rickshawpuller died on the spot.
The police seized the truck, but its driver managed to escape.
In Bogra, two people were killed and eight others injured in a collision between two trucks.
The dead were identified as Abdul Hamid, 60, and Kalpana Khatun, 43, of Chutbari village.
Witnesses said a sand-laden truck hit another truck carrying passengers at about 7:00am at Chandarpara in Dhunat, killing two passengers on the spot.
Five of the injured were admitted to Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Our correspondent in Chapainawabganj reports: A woman was killed in a road accident at Mastanbazar in Monakasha, Shibganj.
The victim was identified as Shamsunnahar, 50, wife of Md Israil Hossain of Mobarakpur.
The police said a speeding motor vehicle, locally known as Bhutbhuti, knocked her down in the morning, leaving her critically injured. She succumbed to her injuries on her way to Shibganj Health Complex.
Police seized the vehicle and arrested its driver Md Zodha.
