Road link snaps as bridge collapses
Road communication between northern Bauffal upazila and Baufal and Patuakhali towns came to a halt as the lone bridge on Patuakhali-Nurainpur collapsed about a week ago.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) officials blamed heavy rainfall while locals said the bridge collapsed for lack of renovation.
LGED constructed the bridge in 1992 near Nurainpur bazaar.
Since then no renovation took place and the bridge gradually turned dilapidated and risky. Over 50,000 people of Kalishuri and Nurainpur areas under Baufal upazila had been using it for going to Baufal upazila and Patuakhali district headquarters.
On July 8, on side of the bridge suddenly caved in for about three feet for the road level.
Local shopkeepers said they are suffering a lot as they cannot carry goods to Baufal upazila town or Patuakhali district headquarters for lack of vehicular movement.
Abdur Rahman Sarder, UP chairman of Kalishuri union said they wrote to LGED for renovation but in vain.
Contacted, Md Eunus Ali, upazila engineer of LGED said the bridge collapsed as heavy rainfall removed earth from its foot and other adjacent points.
"We will take immediate steps to resume the road communication", he said.
