The government has decided to increase the price of urea fertiliser from Tk 12 to Tk 20 a kilogram due to the price hike in the international market.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday.
Ministers and secretaries from agriculture, food, industries, energy and finance ministries also attended the meeting held at the Gano Bhaban, said an official of the agriculture ministry.
Six months ago, urea was selling at Tk 20,000 to Tk 22,000 per tonne in the international market, but the price has now reached around Tk 35,000 per tonne, he said.
The government took the decision as to maintain the price at Tk 12 per kg urea requires a huge subsidy, he added.
