Mob kills robbery suspect

A mob beat one suspected robber to death and injured two others at Demra village under Kaliganj upazila early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Selim Hossain, 35, of Gopaldi in Narsingdi district while the injured are Jalal Uddin, 38, of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj, and Asad, 35, of Muktapur village of Kaliganj.
Police said a gang of some 25 robbers broke into the house of Sheikh Monjur Bari at Demra village and looted valuables and cash.
Following the incident, an announcement was made through a microphone from a local mosque about the robbery.
Hundreds of locals then started hunting for the robbers with sticks. They caught two suspected robbers Selim and Jalal from Ekata ferry ghat area and beat them up severely. Then, on information extracted from the two, locals caught Asad from his home and beat him up.
The police were called in. But the angry mob beat up the robbers again in presence of police, leaving Selim dead on the spot, said Daud Hossain, acting officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.
