The main opposition BNP is preparing a budget proposal which the party chairperson will reveal prior to the submission of the national budget in parliament on June 9.
The party also assigned a think-tank to analyse the national budget, said party insiders. Members of the think-tank may give some suggestions about the proposed budget later.
The opposition's budget proposal will also feature the government's failure in implementing last year's budget, party sources said. Khaleda Zia may place her party's proposal at a press conference in the city in the first week of June.
Decrease in foreign direct investment and export, trade deficit with India, slow implementation of annual development programme and failure to control inflation, among others, will figure prominently in her speech, a party leader told The Daily Star.
The opposition leader in her speech will put forward a few concrete proposals to boost the economy and save the share market.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP acting secretary general, yesterday said the proposal would be finalised in consultation with the chairperson upon her return from the US.
Khaleda last year placed a set of proposals at a pre-budget meet-the-press, first of its kind by any opposition party in the country's history.
Party insiders said a committee led by former minister MK Anwar with party leaders and experts including former ministers Osman Farruk and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and economist Mahbub Ullah is preparing the proposal while Mirza Fakhrul is coordinating the whole thing.
The committee members will hear the budget speech by the finance minister from the chairperson's Gulshan office and give instant reaction to the proposed budget to the media.
