66 mutineers jailed in Khagrachhari
Sixty-six jawans of 30 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were yesterday sentenced to jail terms ranging from four months to seven years for their involvement in mutiny at the battalion headquarters in Panchhari upazila of Khagrachhari on February 26, 2009.
Of them, three were jailed for seven years, two for five years, seven for three years, five for two years and six months, three for six years, four for two years, three for three years, eight for one year and six months, six for one year, six for nine months, 12 for six months, four for four months, and one was jailed for six years and six months, one for four years and six months and another for four years. The special court-15 also fined the convicts Tk 100 each.
The special court-15 headed by Khagrachhari Sector Commander Col Abu Wahab Mohammad Hafizul Haque acquitted five jawans as charges brought against them could not be proved. Two other members of the court were Lt Col Sayedis Saqline and Major AZM Golam Mostafa Al-Mamun.
The court framed charges against 71 jawans on March 15. According to the charges, the jawans revolted against their officers at the battalion headquarters in Panchhari on February 26, 2009 and looted arms and ammunition from armoury and fired blank shots.
One of the accused named Md Faruk Mia confessed to his involvement in the mutiny while the rest 70 claimed innocence. The court then recorded depositions of the prosecution witnesses.
