AL man killed over tender
An Awami League activist was killed in a fierce clash between two groups of AL men over submission of a tender in Shailkupa yesterday.
The dead is Abdur Rashid, 28, of Kazipara village in Shailkupa.
Two groups of local AL activists locked into a clash in the evening over submitting tender documents of Fazilpur and Khulumbaria Haats, said Sagir Mia, officer-in-charge of Shailkupa Police Station.
Poura AL president Toyeb Ali Joarder and Kazi Ashraful Azam, ex- president of Poura AL, backed the groups.
Witnesses said loyalists of Toyeb hacked Rashid to death with machetes during the clash. Around 25 activists of both the groups were injured.
Police recovered Rashid's body from a lane in the upazila town around 6:30pm and sent it to Shailkupa Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Azmul Haque imposed section 144 in the evening.
Earlier in the morning, at least seven AL activists were injured in another clash between the two feuding groups of the ruling party.
Three of them were admitted to the health complex, while the others received primary treatment.
Police fired four rounds of tear gas to avert further clash, added the OC.
The Daily Star tried to reach Toyeb Ali Joarder over the mobile phone for his comment on the incident, but found it switched off.
