Ruet reopens today amid tight security
Classes at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) will resume today amid tight security, after an unscheduled closure of around two months.
Meanwhile, the dormitories of both male and female students reopened yesterday.
The decision to reopen Ruet was taken at an academic council meeting of the university on Tuesday with Vice Chancellor Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury in the chair.
The Ruet VC sought cooperation from all quarters including administration and local people to maintain a congenial atmosphere on the campus for running academic activities smoothly.
Sources said, the university authorities took a tight security measures to avoid repeat of any untoward situation on the campus. Administration sources said the authorities asked the law enforcers and detective branch men to check the identity cards of students at university entrance and hall gates.
Ruet authorities suspended the classes for an indefinite period and directed the students to vacant the halls on February 23 following a day-long clashes between the students of Ruet and Agrani School and College (ASC), located inside the Ruet complex. The clashes left at least 25 people including two photojournalists injured.
Meanwhile, the students of Rajshahi University (RU) started leaving the campus as a 45-day summer vacation began yesterday.
Classes and examinations will remain suspended till May 31 but offices and 16 residential dormitories will remain open during the vacation while the official activities will remain closed from 2 May to 7 May.
