Rangpur sportsmen demand action against DSA secy
Sportsmen and a number of Rangpur Divisional Sports Association members demonstrated yesterday demanding withdrawal of the deputy commissioner and suspension of the District Sports Association (DSA) secretary Abdul Gafur for their alleged corruption.
The agitated sportsmen and DSA leaders also gave a memorandum to the divisional commissioner Jasim Uddin Ahmad for action against the DC and DSA secretary.
They alleged that Gafur misappropriated about Tk 50 lakh at the government fund sanctioned for the purpose of sports in the district in the last 12 years.
They also said the DSA secretary in association with deputy commissioner rented out Rangpur Gymnasium to TCB illegally for use as its depot.
Members of the Divisional Sports Association, Rangpur led by Biplob Prasad, Shuvo Ranjan Deb Bablu led the demonstration.
Director of National Sport Council Sheikh Atahar Hossain a few months ago made an investigation into the alleged corruption by MA Gafur. He detected that Gafur misappropriated about Tk five lakh and forged the signature of the former deputy commissioner.
The director placed the probe report before the divisional commissioner and proposed a through investigation.
He also recommended suspension of Gafur from the committee.
The aggrieved sportsmen and DSA leaders alleged that the divisional commissioner sent the investigation report to the DC but to no effect.
Contacted, deputy commissioner BM Enamul Haque told this correspondent that he got the investigation report three days back. "How can I take action against Gafur when I got the report on Thursday," he posed.
Talking to this correspondent MA Gafur refuted the allegation of misappropriation of government fund.
He said, “I have been the DSA secretary for the last 12 years. I won in the DSA election in 2008 last. Since then my opponents have been spreading this propaganda against me.”
