PM seeks women's help
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday sought cooperation from the women community to implement the newly formulated National Women Development Policy.
A certain quarter is misleading the common people by spreading false campaign against the policy, she said while addressing a public meeting at the BA College ground in the afternoon.
Hasina said that Awami Legaue (AL) had never gone against the holy Quran and Sunnah and will never do so in the future.
“Let me assure you, AL will never go against the holy Quran and Sunnah,” she said.
The prime minister said those who always wanted to keep the women at the backyard are now talking against the women development policy.
“Please help me to implement the women policy for the overall development of women,” she told the meeting.
Hasina mentioned that the present government is in power to improve the overall condition of the country. “You've voted us to power to bring about a change. We won't stop our activities before developing the whole country and its people,” she said.
Responding to opposition leader Khaleda Zia's allegation about the constitution, the PM said the country is being run under the constitution.
Major Zia grabbed power illegally violating the Constitution and formed the BNP, she said.
“It is regretful that you (Khaleda) are now talking about the constitution. There is nothing to worry about the constitution. The country is running according to the constitution.”
Hasina said, “Khaleda Zia is now out of her mind as she can't make money illegally as in the past.”
About food price hike, she said the present government has taken all necessary steps to ease the public sufferings caused by the price-hike of food. “We'll ensure that none suffers due to the food price hike.”
She said the government has been selling rice and other essentials through OMS across the country to provide essential food items at subsidised prices.
The premier said that the previous BNP-led 4-party alliance government had “failed to produce even a single MW of electricity” during its five-year rule.
“But, we've already added more than 2,000MW electricity to the national grid,” she said adding that after 2012, sufferings of the people would be alleviated.
Referring to Khaleda's remarks, Hasina said nowadays the opposition leader has become obsessed to say that the government has failed. “Compare your rule with ours; you'll see who failed to serve the country.”
She also alleged that the last time the BNP-Jamaat government had grabbed huge amount of money in the name of providing electricity.
The government has already provided maximum facilities to farmers for the development of the agriculture sector, she said.
“We are here to serve you; no one will be able to detract us from that mission. All of us are merely your servants. You voted us to serve you. And we'll be doing it,” Hasina told the gathering.
Sirajganj district AL President Mostafizur Rahman presided over the meeting while Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, PM's advisers HT Imam and Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, among others, addressed it.
