RU collects all official files for investigation

Rajshahi University (RU) authorities yesterday collected all the official files of music and drama department to carry out an investigation.
The files were taken to the university registrar office from the department as the authorities at a Syndicate meeting on Wednesday night asked the registrar to collect the files and documents.
The meeting, chaired by vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan, also accepted the conditional resignation of Prof Moloy Bhoumick.
It also formed a seven-member committee to investigate the incidents at music and drama department.
Headed by Institute of Business Administration (IBA) director Prof Mukhlesur Rahman the committee was asked to submit a report within three weeks.
The authorities also asked the university registrar to keep all the files and documents of the department in his possession.
The emergency Syndicate meeting followed the decision by Prof Moloy Bhoumick to step down as departmental chairman on certain conditions as the teachers and students of the department continued agitation from March 31. They were demanding his removal alleging that he took several arbitrary decisions ignoring the academic and planning committee since taking office on November 10, 2009.
The teachers were observing work abstention. The students of the department joined them last Saturday.
At a press conference on the campus on Wednesday, Prof Bhoumick refuted the charges but decided to step down on conditions.
The conditions include punishment to the teachers who locked the department office defying rules of the university, punitive actions against those who were found guilty by the probe committees formed by the university Syndicate before his joining the department, and investigation and action against those who brought 'baseless' allegations against him.
The authorities at the Syndicate meeting accepted the conditional resignation letter of Prof Moloy Bhoumick and decided to probe into the matter.
Hearing the news of resignation of the department chairman, the teachers and students of the department withdrew their agitation programme at around 6:30pm.
