Chairman quits on conditions
Rajshahi University (RU) Music and Drama department chairman yesterday said he was ready to step down on certain conditions.
At a press conference on the campus, Prof Moloy Bhoumick also urged the university authorities to cancel his deputation appointment as he was made the chairman from Management department.
“For the greater interest of the university and keep its atmosphere congenial, I have decided to resign from the post on a few conditions,” he said.
The conditions include punishment to the teachers who locked the department office defying rules of the university, punitive actions against those who were found guilty by the probe committees formed by the university Syndicate before his joining the department, and investigation and action against those who brought 'baseless' allegations against him.
Bhoumick, however, claimed that a few teachers were willfully misguiding others against him after failing to realise their 'illogical' demands.
He also said that some BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed teachers were instigating the demonstration.
Over 100 teachers including prominent writer Prof Hasan Azizul Haque were present at the press conference. Expressing deep concern over the issue, the teachers yesterday demanded punishment to the teachers who locked the department chairman's room hampering academic activities.
Later, Prof Moloy Bhoumick along with several teachers met with the university vice chancellor and placed a written statement containing his decision and conditions.
The teachers also placed a memorandum to the VC on behalf of Progressive Teachers Society (PTS) of the university demanding punishment to the teachers of Music and Drama department after investigation.
Vice chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan received the written statement of Prof Bhoumick and the memorandum of PTS and assured them legal steps after investigation.
