PM pledges steps to check food prices
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday assured of taking all necessary steps so that the people do not face any difficulty in purchasing essentials.
“No matter how much the price of food goes up, we will take all necessary steps to keep the food prices lower,” she said, adding that the present government is a pro-poor government.
Hasina also referred to the open market sale, vulnerable group feeding and other programmes including supply of agricultural inputs at affordable rates to the farmers to keep the food price within the reach of the commoners.
She was addressing a public rally at Dapdapia after inaugurating the Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabat Bridge over Kirtonkhola River here.
The PM assured that the government would fulfil the hope and aspirations of the countrymen by taking the right steps in time.
“Steps will be taken to restore the lost glory of Barisal which was earlier well-known as granary of the country,” she said.
The government is taking an initiative for direct bus communication between Dhaka and Kuakata in Patuakhali, she said, adding that steps would be taken to further develop Kuakata as a tourist resort.
Hasina said the government would take steps to generate electricity in Bhola to ensure regular power supply in the southern region.
The PM said that the government would establish schools in the remote areas of the southern region.
Mentioning the potential of ship-breaking and shipbuilding industries in Barisal and other coastal areas, Hasina said if necessary, the government will set up another port in the region for economic uplift of the people.
She also announced that the government would set up a Marine Academy in Barisal.
Later, Hasina laid the foundation stone of the Barisal University at Dapdapia.
Awami League presidium member Tofail Ahmed, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, former chief whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah, among others, also addressed the rally.
