Jamaat, Shibir offices in Netrakona attacked
Local Chhatra League (BCL) activists allegedly attacked the district Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir offices at Kurpar in the town when the partymen were holding a discussion on International Mother Language Day yesterday.
Jamaat and locals said, the attackers also ransacked and damaged two Shibir hostels and injured at least 50 Jamaat and Shibir activists including general secretary of district Shibir Monowar Hossen and general secretary of Sadar Shibir Mohammad Zakaria.
Seriously injured Monowar Hossen and Ibrahim were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Others were admitted to different clinics in the town.
Police also arrested Jamaat activist Sadekur Rahman and Shibir activist Abdullah Al-Mamun from the spot.
Police and locals said, the attackers set fire to at least eight motorbikes, students' certificates, books and valuables at the hostels and offices.
On information, Fire Service men and police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
President of Netrakona Chhatra Shibir Zahirul Islam said about 50 BCL activists with sharp and lethal weapons attacked them in presence of police. The attackers damaged property worth Tk 50 lakh, he claimed.
Contacted, general secretary of district BCL Khurshadul Alam told this correspondent that no member of the ruling party's student front were involved in the attack.
Netrakona Sadar police station sources said, Jamaat-Shibir activists were planning destructive activities. Hearing this, local people attacked them, they said, refuting Shibir claim of BCL attack.
