Indian media hail intensity of emotions
The Indian media commended on Friday the opening ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup held in Dhaka describing it as a “show of epic proportions” in which “the intensity of emotions” stood out.
The Bangabandhu National Stadium witnessed a “show of epic proportions that many locals truly believe is the biggest thing to have happened to the country since gaining independence in 1971”, gushed Indian Express which singled out the daredevil laser show with hanging acrobats for particular praise.
What impressed the Indian cricket writers reporting from Dhaka was the tremendous enthusiasm among Bangladeshis about the World Cup and pointed out that while 25,000 people were inside the stadium, almost as many danced and sung outside it during the entire opening ceremony and even a couple of hours before and after the event.
“The ceremony had its fair share of fantastic moments but aged popstar Bryan Adams' act wasn't one of them”, said Indian Express adding “a night to remember it was”.
The Times of India said the opening ceremony “resembled a big-budget community cultural show” which was “good in parts, bland at times but the less impressive bits were easy to ignore in an arena packed with an estimated 25,000 cheering fans”.
The daily described Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's speech as “short and sweet” and said the laser beam show “was the most appreciated item of the night”. Runa Laila's song “Dama-dam mast kalandar” and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy's “De ghuma ke” number also came in for praise from the newspaper.
However, the Times of India's overall assessment of the opening ceremony was that it was “an overcooked biryani. What stood out was the intensity of emotion and the heartwarming manner in which the people took to the event”.
The Hindu said “tradition blended with modernity” in the opening ceremony and said the Bangabandhu National Stadium was “awash with emotions”.
