Munshiganj still tense
Tension was running high among the villagers in Arial Beel area in Munshiganj yesterday despite the prime minister's announcement of not constructing an airport there.
Police tried in vain to enter different villages on Wednesday night as the villagers put barricade on their way, said member secretary of Arial Beel Rakkha Committee.
The villagers guarded the entry points the whole night in turns, he added.
Our Munshiganj correspondent adds, police last night arrested Jalil Master, 50, joint convenor of Arial Beel Rakkha Committee, from the capital's Jatrabari area.
They also arrested Ilias Hossain, 42, on Wednesday from Tongi in Gazipur in connection with Monday's violence, said Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station.
Both of the arrestees are accused in each of the three cases filed on Tuesday for killing Sub-Inspector Motiur Rahman, attacking police and setting afire a police camp, added the OC.
With the two, a total of 22 persons have been arrested so far.
“Police did not conduct any drive at the villages in Sreenagar,” claimed the official adding, they were interrogating seven persons on remand.
The law enforcers also recovered one of the four missing shotguns from Hashara in Sreenagar yesterday.
In a statement, Arial Beel Rakkha Committee leaders demanded judicial probe into the incident and withdrawal of the cases, terming those 'false and fabricated'.
They also expressed shock at the death of the police official and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
SI Motiur was killed and about 100 others were injured when people protesting a proposed airport on Arial Beel were locked in a series of clashes with police on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Munshiganj on Monday.
